Evercade Game of the Month #8: Batty Zabella

1 Tobi

Game of the Month is a programme where Evercade owners can download a new, independently developed game for free every month between April and December. You can enjoy the full version of the game without the limits right up until the next update, at which point it will be replaced with something completely new to try. Next year, all of the Game of the Month titles for this year, plus a few exclusive extras, will be collected together on the Indie Heroes Collection 4 cartridge, likely to drop in February.

Game of the Month for November 2024 just missed Halloween, but that’s no reason not to enjoy this spooky adventure from Ice.Cold.Blood and publisher The Retro Room. We’re delighted to introduce you to the world’s newest horror icon, Batty Zabella. She’s got a mystery to solve: the whereabouts of her beloved Husbano! It’s up to you to help her through this horror comedy adventure — she may give you a bit of sass along the way, but it’s all in good fun.

Batty Zabella is a point-and-click adventure game inspired by classics such as Icom Simulations’ ShadowGate and Deja Vu. The action unfolds from a first-person perspective, and you interact with the environment by moving a cursor around with the D-pad and “clicking” on things using the B button. This will prompt Batty to give her observations about the thing you clicked on, and if it’s something she can do something with, she will take the appropriate action, such as picking up an item, flipping a switch or opening a door.

To navigate around the environment, you “click” on the exits such as doorways, staircases, corridors and the edge of scenes. In some rooms, you’ll see an arrow at the bottom of the screen. If it’s a curly arrow, clicking on it will cause Batty to turn on her heel and face the other direction within the same room. If it’s pointing “out” of the screen towards you, clicking on it will cause Batty to “back up” to a location that is “behind” her current point of view. Navigating around the world of Batty Zabella is pretty intuitive for the most part, but if you want to get a better sense of how different locations connect to one another, you can hit Select to pull up the area map.

Useful items will often — though not always — sparkle to let you know they’re there. Clicking on something Batty might need will cause her to pick it up automatically. When Batty reaches a situation that requires a particular item, she will automatically use it if she has it in her possession. You can check her inventory at any time by pressing the Start button.

One thing to bear in mind when exploring the world of Batty Zabella is that it pays to examine certain things multiple times, particularly if something has happened or Batty has realised something between your two attempts to search the object or location. It may be that Batty has no real reason to look closely at the thing you clicked on when you first encountered it, but after learning some new information or deciding on a new task she needs to complete, she may then find it more worthwhile to investigate. If at any point, you feel “stuck”, revisit locations you’ve already been to and take another look at everything in the scene — you might find something new that you (and Batty) missed first time around!

For the most part, you can take your time exploring in Batty Zabella, but there’s one exception. When spirits are present, you and Batty must react quickly to either escape the situation or destroy them. To escape, simply move to another location in the usual way. To battle the spirit, Batty needs to charge her special hairpin with spiritual energy, then click repeatedly on the spirit to banish it from this world. Not sure how to charge it with spiritual energy? You’re going to have to figure that out for yourself! Don’t forget to recharge it now and then — you wouldn’t want to be caught facing a spirit without a means of dispatching it, now, would you?

Batty’s current status is indicated by her portrait on the left side of the game screen. If she spends too long in the company of a spirit, she’ll become hurt and tired. To replenish her energy, find a convenient place to sleep and bed down for a little while. This will also provide you with the opportunity to save your game — or, of course, you can also use Evercade’s built-in save state system to bookmark your progress at any time.

Batty is counting on you to help her save her family and uncover the mystery of who wishes them ill! Are you up to the challenge of solving the mystery and dealing with Batty’s particularly strong personality while doing so? Only one way to find out, now, isn’t there?

Please note that saves from the Game of the Month edition of Batty Zabella will not carry across to the Indie Heroes Collection 4 cartridge when it releases in February of 2025 (TBC).
